CBORD Awarded $43,000 Training Grant to Build Employee Leadership and Management Skills

For Immediate Release

October 21, 2003

Ithaca, New York—The CBORD Group, Inc. last week was awarded a State University of NY Workforce Development Training Grant for $43,000. This equates to 4.3% of the $1,000,000 appropriation by the State legislature "to provide workforce development training courses to businesses and organizations to promote and encourage the location and development of new businesses in the state, and to create and retain employment opportunities in the state and local community." Selection criteria for the grant included businesses expanding operations, job creation, and innovative demonstration projects, among others.

CBORD will use the grant to assess its leadership and management skills and to create a targeted training program for its employees. "We are thrilled to receive this grant. The software industry is competitive, and our employees’ knowledge is a key competitive advantage. We can now give our employees the additional leadership and management tools necessary for CBORD to stay competitive and to help us achieve 20% annual growth over the next five years," stated Lisa Patz, director of Human Resources and Corporate Services at CBORD.

"Our employees are our greatest asset. While we currently have a good training program, until now we have lacked the resources to look at employee development strategically. This grant will help us do so," stated John Alexander, president of CBORD.

Each year CBORD employees have the opportunity to participate in a three-part training program, including a management, professional development, and personal development series. Patz had already planned to add a leadership series. A portion of the grant will be used to kick it off.

While CBORD employees themselves or community volunteers conduct many of CBORD’s educational sessions, Patz also works with Beth Fuller, business development & training specialist with TC3, to organize classes. Fuller also played a role in procuring the grant for CBORD, "I see this grant as a great opportunity for CBORD, CBORD employees, and for Ithaca. Grants like this are difficult to come by, but CBORD has shown that a growing business in Ithaca can play and compete in the big leagues. As CBORD grows, more jobs will become available. We all win." The TC3 Business Development and Training Center works to bring grants and training programs to local businesses.
